Meet the Artist: Lizzy Love
The painting process has been a part of Lizzy’s life as long as she can remember, and has helped to shape who she is and the way she looks at the world around her. Growing up in Memphis, Tennessee, she developed a fascination with art at an early age, and eventually majored in art while studying at the University of Mississippi. Lizzy moved to Nashville shortly thereafter and began pursuing a career in art. Lizzy makes abstract and expressionist paintings using acrylics, gouache, oil pastels, and watercolor paints. Her work is very loose and gestural, showing bold strokes to convey the fluidity and raw impulse which comprise each painting.
Lizzy’s latest series, her “Lovely Ladies,” are layered in pattern, color blocking & contrast. The collection is rooted in the fundamentals of fashion while also representing positive qualities that Lizzy has been embracing as a new mother: community, femininity, & reverence.
This body of work has been a rebirth for Lizzy creatively. Born out of a time of uncertainty and lots of questioning, she was pushed to dig deep and get back to basics. In an attempt to just do something totally outside of her typical subject matter (landscapes), Lizzy started doodling in her sketch book from magazine clippings. A lifetime admirer of fashion and style, this seemed like a fun avenue to further explore.
The sketches evolved from realistic drawings to focusing more on the abstraction of the figure with pattern incorporated. Lizzy is also a big believer that the environment of your home shapes your attitude, and for that reason she loves interior design. That love is what led her to start incorporating furniture and interior surroundings into the pieces. She pulls apart and puts back together the lines and shapes of many of her favorite interiors, placing them amongst the figures in a dynamic way.
Expressions of femininity & strength are depicted in these paintings. They are a way to draw attention to what being a woman entails. Many times it means being fierce and strong. Many times it means leaning on and drawing your strength from family, and friends that are like family. While creating each piece, Lizzy drew upon the love and reverence she has for all the women in her life; the women who have shaped her, lifted her up when she needed it, and inspired her.
